Shaukat Thanvi (1904–1982) was a renowned Indian-Pakistani humorist, essayist, journalist, playwright, and poet, born in Bandraban, Mathura, UP, India, on February 2, 1904. His ancestral hometown, Thana Bhaun in Muzaffarnagar, inspired his last name. Though he had little formal schooling, Thanvi’s wit and keen observations made him a celebrated figure in Urdu literature. He began his career in journalism in 1928 and later worked as a broadcaster and writer for Radio Pakistan. His humorous and satirical writing, such as the popular Saudeshi Rail, critiqued societal flaws with sharp irony. Thanvi authored over sixty books, including short stories, essays, and plays, and earned recognition for his unique style that combined humor with social commentary. He was awarded the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in 1963.
